The first step in ensuring your concrete pool deck is safe is to take the necessary steps to make it slip resistant. This is extremely important, since the smooth finish of concrete can create a hazardous condition when water beads up on the surface. There are a number of options for providing a safer surface, depending on the type of concrete pool deck you are installing.
Stamped concrete has a pattern in the surface that provides a degree of traction. However, you can also add a clear, gritty substance to the sealant before it is applied for extra traction. This sealant will need to be reapplied periodically to ensure the texture is not worn away through use and weather.
Another option in creating a safe concrete pool deck is to apply a textured overlay to the existing concrete. One type of overlay that is quite attractive is an exposed aggregate finish with small stones that add texture to the concrete pool deck. The right stone can also provide a cooler surface for bare feet, offering another advantage to this finish. An exposed aggregate finish still needs to be sealed on the surface so it doesn't get damaged from chlorine and weather conditions.

In addition to using the right materials to install your concrete pool deck, you will also need to keep the surface clean. Mold and mildew buildup can make a pool deck more slippery, so it is important to clean the surface with a power washer periodically. You will also need to reapply the sealant on a regular schedule, since the coating can eventually wear away and make for a more hazardous surface.
